Private Cask Ownership
We can’t think of anywhere better than John O’Groats to make whisky. Partly thanks to the climate which is perfect for whisky maturation but also due to the great people who live in and visit the area. It’s a truly special part of Scotland!
We’re excited to offer a limited number of casks available for personal ownership across various cask types and sizes.
Create your own whisky, your way.
KEY INFORMATION

FAQs Summary
Should I buy a full cask or a 20% Cask Share?
That’s entirely personal choice. You may want to consider how much you want to spend, what you will do with the bottles after maturation and what flavour profile you are looking for.
What is the benefit of purchasing a 20% cask share?
A cask share allows you to experience the joy of owning part of a cask at a reduced cost. It also provides the unique opportunity to purchase shares from multiple cask types, allowing you to enjoy a variety of flavour profiles.
Can I purchase more than one share?
Yes, you can purchase multiple shares, whether in the same cask or across different cask types, to suit your preferences.
What does the cost include?
Includes the spirit filled into the cask, maturation, and warehousing. Additional costs for bottling, labelling, and taxes (e.g., duty and VAT) will apply when the whisky is removed from our warehouse. The cask is not included in the price.
Can I be part of the cask filling process?
Yes if you purchase a full cask. Unfortunately this option is not available for cask shares.
Where will my cask be stored?
Your cask will be stored in our bonded warehouse in John O'Groats.
Can I visit my cask?
Absolutely! We welcome you to visit 8 Doors Distillery and see your cask during its maturation as part of any booked tour.
How long will my cask be matured for?
We expect 130L casks to be ready between 6 and 8 years, 250L casks between 8 and 10 years. Storage and insurance costs are covered throughout this maturation period. We will determine when ready for bottling. Full cask owners may be able to leave their cask for longer, we will discuss that at the time and costs will apply. Cask shares must be bottled when we say ready.
What happens when my whisky is ready to be bottled?
When your whisky reaches maturity, we’ll contact you to discuss bottling options, including whether you want it to be bottled at cask strength or 46% .abv.
Do I get to keep the cask?
No, we will retain the cask after the maturation period has completed.
Are there any additional costs to consider?
Yes. The initial purchase is for the spirit filled into the cask only. Once the whisky is ready for bottling, there will be costs for bottling, and where applicable UK Duty and VAT will be payable.
I live outside the UK, can I buy a cask?
Yes, as long as we can ship the bottles to your country or you have a UK address for shipping. Some restrictions apply.
